There's a version of the monsoon that only makes sense from inside a villa on the edge of the Ulhas river. The rain comes in sheets, the hills turn a green that looks almost fake, and every stream you drove over on the way in is suddenly a waterfall. Karjat in July is not a compromise — it's the main event.
What to actually do
Not much, gloriously. Watch the rain from a covered terrace with something hot. Walk to the river when it eases. If you're restless, the Kondana caves are a short, muddy trek away and worth the shoes you'll ruin. Otherwise the plan is a pot of tea, a long lunch, and the sound of water on the roof.
Pack for wet: quick-dry clothes, a spare pair of shoes, and a power bank in case the line flickers. Your host will have candles and a backup ready — the rain is part of the deal, not a problem to solve.
